At the end of this stimulating home study Economics course you will have a solid basis on which to build a career in banking, finance or government. The course will give you an in-depth understanding of how economics impacts on societies across the globe as well as an appreciation of how the market economy influences national and international policy. A detailed analysis of the European Union will also help prepare you for a variety of career opportunities.

Each lesson begins with a set of clearly stated objectives and an explanation of their place in the overall programme of study. Effective learning is encouraged through frequent activities and self-assessment questions.

Key Aims

The course will enable you to:

  • develop an understanding of economic concepts and theories through a critical consideration of current economic issues, problems and institutions that affect everyday life;
  • select, interpret and use appropriate data from a range of sources;
  • analyse, explain and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the market economy and the role of government within it;
  • develop a critical approach to economic models and methods of enquiry;
  • study economic choices and markets;
  • study the national and international economy.

The Syllabus and Assessment

The course prepares you for the Cambridge (CIE) A-level syllabus 9708. The full A-Level qualification comprises both AS and A-level components.  We have selected this syllabus as it is the one best suited to distance learners.

Assessment at AS level is by two written papers of 1 hour and 1 hour and 30 minutes, and at A-level by two written papers of 1 hour and 2 hours and 15 minutes.

The Home Study Course

Your study text and your online learning file  will contain everything you need to start studying right away. The course is designed specifically to cover the above syllabus. So you can be confident that you will learn everything you need to achieve a high grade in your coursework and in the examination.

Your Tutor and your Assignments 

Your tutor is your online personal learning coach whom you can email at any time, and  to whom you can also talk via Skype.  He or she will give you detailed feedback on your learning assignments, and plenty of advice and encouragement throughout your course. 

You will have assignments with exam type questions to complete at regular intervals during the course. These are a key part of your learning process. They will prepare you thoroughly for your exam and will enable you and your tutor to gauge your progress throughout. Completing the course assignments will greatly increase your chances of a good exam grade.   

When you’ve finished each assignment, you email it to your tutor for assessment via your online file. Your tutor will provide you with rapid and detailed feedback, so you'll see your skills and knowledge developing month by month.
