Communicating in German will help you get to know the German people and the German culture.  Learning another language, such as German, will open your mind to new ideas and new ways of looking at the world.

A modern foreign language, such as German is now part of the new English Baccalaureate, which consists of five core subjects.  These include (in addition to a modern foreign language) English Language, Maths, a Science (Biology, Chemistry or Physics) and a Humanity (Geography or History).  Yet another good reason to consider taking IGCSE German.

German is one of the English Baccalaureate subjects.

Key Aims

The course will enable you to:

  • understand and use spoken and written German in a range of familiar and practical contexts, and for a variety of purposes,
  • communicate effectively inwriting,
  • know and understand German grammar and its practical application,
  • know and understand the countries and communities where German is spoken,
  • gain a sure foundation for the further study of German.

Syllabus and Assessment

Our home study course will prepare you for the Edexcel syllabus 4GN0. There are two papers, one (reading and writing) of 1½ hours, the other (listening) of ½ an hour, and these may be taken in May/June of each year worldwide.  Note that this course does not prepare you for the oral examination, which is optional only.

There are many Edexcel exam centres in the UK, while students outside the UK will normally be able to sit for their examinations at their nearest British Council office.

The Home Study Course

We have selected a book which is fully endorsed by Edexcel as your study text, together with a valuable study guide.  You’ll find both very easy to work with. These, together with the materials in your password protected file (which is online), contain everything you need to start studying right away. The course is designed specifically to cover the above syllabus - so you can be confident that you'll learn everything you need, in order to achieve the best possible grade in the examination.

Your Tutor and your Assignments

Your tutor is your online personal learning coach whom you can email at any time, and  to whom you can also talk via Skype.  He or she will give you detailed feedback on your learning assignments, and plenty of advice and encouragement throughout your course.

You will have assignments with exam type questions to complete at regular intervals during the course. These are a key part of your learning process. They will prepare you thoroughly for your exam and will enable you and your tutor to gauge your progress throughout. Completing the course assignments will greatly increase your chances of a good exam grade.

When you’ve finished each assignment, you email it to your tutor for assessment via your online file. Your tutor will provide you with rapid and detailed feedback, so you'll see your skills and knowledge developing month by month.
