Subject: Maths

Originally from Minnesota in the US, my career in education began during my final training placement in the lovely country of New Zealand. But my first teaching role was in a school in Luton, Bedfordshire. It was by far the most challenging job I’d ever had, but it provided me with endless opportunities. Upon reflection now, the decision to move to the UK was the best decision I’ve made in my professional life giving me great chances to grow and develop as a teacher and as a school leader.

I have been teaching Maths for 15 years in the UK from Lower Secondary up to A Level Maths and Further Maths, as well as a two year stint teaching A Level Physics. My passion for Maths and Science was born out of having amazing teachers when I was in High School. The 15-year-old version of me would have laughed at you if you told him that he would become a Maths teacher. At that age, the only thing that mattered to me was ice hockey and baseball (I played both to semi-professional level). However, my pre-calculus and calculus teacher changed all that when I was 17. As a result of his efforts, I went to Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota to study the liberal arts, as well as to obtain a degree in Mathematics with a minor in Physics. It was there that I fell in love with the science of learning and found the vocation of teaching. This passion has now taken me all over the world and introduced me to many notable people; both students and colleagues.

I’m a family man at heart. I have a lovely wife (also a teacher) and an adorable daughter who is five years old. We spend a lot of time as a family exploring the south downs in East Sussex as well as finding as many ways as possible to have fun.

In recent months, I left the mainstream classroom to spend time with my family and pursue a number of new challenges, including offering Positive Psychology Coaching, teacher training mentoring, and private tuition to students. In addition, I also serve as Chair of Trustees for an educational charity, the Pestalozzi International Foundation. This new life has also allowed me to discover Wolsey Hall Oxford, a great venture with a great mission. I am very excited to join the team.
