Open your eyes and see the wonderful world around you. That’s what science allows you to do, it’s amazing.
I have loved science for as long as I can remember and although university was never an option, I gained my first job in pharmaceutical research. I was at the forefront of the development of new drugs such as Omeprazole which are still widely used today. I studied for a degree in Biochemistry with Pharmacology by day release and became the project biochemist.
I left research to raise my three children but was asked to assist with teaching Biochemistry at the local college. This progressed to me teaching GCSE Science and A Level Biology. I decided to study for a Post Graduate Certificate of Education with the Open University. It was always very important to me to be around for my young family as they grew up and so teaching became highly attractive to me.
My first teaching job was in a tough comprehensive and in order to get the students ‘switched on’ to science I started a Chemistry Club. One of the first projects involved maggot racing which the boys considered to be ‘cool’. A team developed the project and won a prize in the national final of the Express Yourselves event. Their highlight was discussing their research with the Nobel Prize winner, Jonathan Hare. That’s real science.
I have spent the last eleven years working at an ‘outstanding’ comprehensive. I was employed as a teacher of A Level Chemistry and have also worked as an examiner in this subject. I also had responsibility for science clubs and competitions, working mostly with Key Stage 3 students for the nationally recognised CREST awards.
Many teams over the years have won regional science competitions and attended the BA Big Bang Science National Finals. More recently I completed an Earth Sciences Degree with the Open University and introduced A Level Geology to the school. I love teaching Geology especially leading field trips to places like Lulworth Cove.
I have recently retired and am hoping to learn photography in order to combine my love of walking, travel and Geology with some super photographs. As your Tutor I’m here to support you and answer your questions. Please don’t hesitate to contact me when you need help.
