Jane Wilson

BEd, MEd

For over 25 years, I have been fortunate to teach a range of students in Northern Ireland, England, and the United States. I initially specialised in Education, English and Dramatic Art, developing a love for teaching reading and writing. However, I have always enjoyed using practical activities to enable my students to develop a variety of Maths concepts, so they can solve multi-step and abstract calculations.

I gained an interest in Educational Technology when I was ICT Co-ordinator in England and this grew exponentially during my time in America. I have always incorporated a balance of traditional teaching with Educational Technology and infused this in lessons designed to engage all my students. One of the highlights of the last few years has been my involvement in teaching and coordinating S.T.E.M. Robotics in which pupils discovered the practical implications of Marine Conservation, beach erosion and Environmental Science.

I thoroughly enjoy teaching all subjects where I can help students make cross-curricular connections. Much of my career has been at Key Stage 2, and this has allowed me to provide inter-disciplinary opportunities where students can explore a historical event through scientific research and incorporate mathematical problem solving and investigations to enrich their studies.

It is fascinating to see the unique connections students make between other cultures while they are studying languages, exploring geographical landforms, and developing their map skills. My passion for teaching Geography and French stemmed from my teenage years when I competed in orienteering events around the forests, fells, and mountains of Europe. This love of adventure followed me into adulthood through mountaineering, running, yoga and CrossFit.

I believe it is essential to provide a safe and nurturing learning environment where all students feel they can succeed.  As well as being a classroom teacher, curriculum leader and Key Stage 2 Co-ordinator, I have taken on additional responsibilities as a personal Tutor. This has afforded me opportunities to guide students in a comfortable and supportive setting. Providing relevant real-world learning experiences has always been a major component of my teaching so pupils are able to find success as global citizens.

It is exciting to help develop pupil confidence and self-esteem through positive, growth mindset activities or outdoor learning experiences. I have been involved in animal rescue for many years and I always try to include several of these experiences within my lessons.

Throughout my career, I have continued to learn alongside my students as I believe it is important for them to see their teacher as a lifelong learner. As well as completing a Master degree in Education, Curriculum and Instruction, I have also attained endorsements in Gifted and Talented Education, Teaching English as a Foreign Language, Special Education, Psychology and Counselling.

I thoroughly enjoy teaching and I am compassionate to the diverse learning needs of all students. My ultimate goal is helping pupils reach their full potential through enriching and innovative educational experiences.
