How exams work at Wolsey Hall Oxford
Wolsey Hall Oxford is a registered Cambridge school, but because we are an online school, we are not an exam centre ourselves. Many of our courses require students to sit their exams at external exam centres, as private candidates. In the UK, Cambridge (CIE) and Edexcel have exam centres across the country. Some of these centres (listed below) offer discounts to Wolsey Hall Oxford students.
Outside the UK, many students use the British Council as their exam centre. In some countries, local schools also let private or non-school students sit exams with them.
UK exam centres offering discounts for Wolsey Hall Oxford students
Tutors & Exams provides examination and assessment facilities in Birmingham, Bolton, Coventry, Doncaster, High Wycombe, Romford, St.Neots, Taunton & Wimbledon for home educated and private candidates. All are approved for examination delivery by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) and CAIE. We have affiliated Science laboratories delivering A level Science practical sessions in February Half Term and Easter holidays in Bolton, Coventry, Taunton and 2 x London. We cater for 95% of all A level/ GCSE/ iGCSE subjects and can assist in organising Access Arrangements. We also have two centres in South Africa and provide a service to candidates located internationally who may need help finding an exam centre to sit exams.
Greene’s is Oxford’s oldest tutorial college. Our exam centre is located in the heart of Oxford and is an approved centre for GCSE and A level exams for JCQ (Edexcel, AQA, OCR, WJEC) and CAIE. We have welcomed private candidates for over 20 years and also provide coursework marking, Science practical endorsement courses and centre-assessed grades. We have a wealth of experience in supporting even the most complex of access arrangements and pride ourselves on our individual approach. Wolsey Hall students receive 10% off all examination and tuition fees.
Macclesfield Tutorial College is an approved centre for private and home educated candidates studying Functional Skills, GCSE and A levels with AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC and CAIE boards. We can accommodate a wide variety of subjects, have facilities for most non-exam assessments (including A level and GCSE Science practicals and language oral assessments), and can offer coursework supervision/marking, and centre assessed grades. We have a wealth of experience in supporting all forms of Access Arrangements, including EHC plans with complex arrangements such as in-home exam sittings.
3A Tutors Ltd is an independent examination centre based in Bristol. We support private candidates, including home educated students, from across South-West England and South Wales with their GCSE, IGCSE and A level examinations. We are registered with all the main awarding bodies including, Cambridge (CAIE), Edexcel, AQA, OCR and WJEC. We offer a wide range of Modern Foreign Languages and the A level Science practical endorsements, which are held in state-of-the-art laboratories. Access Arrangements can be organised including the provision of a formal assessment.
The Exam House is a GCSE & A level Exam Centre. We provide quality private and outside candidates exam sitting opportunities across the boards including AQQ, Edexcel, OCR and Cambridge International. We provide the flexibility for even the most complex access arrangements and regularly work with EHC and SENDCO plans. The Exam House works closely with distance learning providers and educational psychologists, including Wolsey Hall Oxford. We also deliver centre assessed grades, coursework marking and lab practical endorsements.
Learning Support
If your child has additional learning needs, our Learning Support team can guide you through the process for special exam arrangements. Our Exam Officers are available to discuss whether these arrangements would benefit your child.
If you require access arrangements, make sure your chosen centre is aware of this. Most will do their best to accept you if they have the facilities. They will advise you of the evidence they will need to submit your application to the exam board, and how you can obtain it. Our Learning Support team is on hand if you wish to have support with applying for Access Arrangements.
Exam Entry
Entering your child for their exams
Wolsey Hall Oxford will provide useful information and help you find a suitable Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel centre, but we can’t apply for you. We can help guide families toward exam centres in their country or local area, but we can’t always guarantee there will be one nearby. Some families may need to travel a bit further, possibly to a different town or city, to find a suitable centre. Our Admissions Officers can give you more details and help you choose a centre that works for your family.
Once you are enrolled, you will get access to our Exam Information course on our student learning platform, which has more useful information and advice about entering your child into their exams. You will also be able to speak with our dedicated Exams Officers, who are happy to answer any questions you may have.
We strongly recommend that you contact suitable exam centres before you enrol with Wolsey Hall Oxford, to check that your child can sit their exams with them for both the courses and levels they choose.
Contact your chosen exam centre to confirm they will accept your child for the May/June or October/November sitting. Note that many centres, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere, do not offer the October/November sitting.

How your child will receive their exam results
Cambridge allows students to view their exam results online. To use this service, you’ll need a username and password from your exam centre. If you have questions, the Exams Officer at your centre will be able to help.
Edexcel also offers an online service called ResultsPlus Direct. This lets students see their results as well as providing a detailed breakdown of their performance in each paper.
After the results period, exam boards will send certificates to the exam centres. You’ll need to speak with your exam centre to arrange collection or delivery of your child’s certificates. Some centres may charge a fee if you choose to have your certificate posted.
What to do if your child needs special consideration
Special consideration is a small adjustment made by exam boards to a student’s mark after their exam, to account for any adverse circumstances such as illness, bereavement or injury, which may have affected their performance.
Each case is different, and exam boards consider several factors when deciding whether to award special consideration. These can include how serious the circumstances were, when the exam took place, and the type of assessment. Adjustments are usually small, as exam boards aim to maintain fairness and ensure the same standards for all students.
You must apply for special consideration within seven days of your child’s most recent affected exam. Please note that medical evidence is usually needed to support your application.
