Why homeschool?
Structured homeschooling combines many of the benefits of traditional schooling, but without the confines of the classroom – and with some significant advantages. Offering an unrivalled degree of flexibility, it’s a style of education that students can personalise to fit their own pace, learning styles and interests whilst achieving internationally recognised qualifications.
A history of homeschooling
The dominant form of education before schools became standardised during the Industrial Revolution, homeschooling has seen a rapid growth in popularity during the 21st Century.
After a surge in interest during the 1970s and 80s fuelled by philosophical, religious and educational concerns, we’re seeing numbers rise once again – this time driven by growing dissatisfaction with mainstream education, digital learning options becoming more accessible (particularly following the Covid pandemic), and demand for more personalised, child-first approaches to education.
What is homeschooling like today?
This style of education tends to mimic the structure of a traditional school in that it often uses set curricula (such as the Cambridge curriculum) and standardised assessment tools. Instead of subjects being taught by teachers in a physical classroom, learning takes place at home, which offers much more flexibility in course choice, pace, location, and learning style. Parents act as mentors or facilitators, sometimes with the support of online Tutors or live classes. At Wolsey Hall Oxford, our Tutors provide feedback on assignments, but unlike other structured homeschooling providers, we don’t offer live classes – allowing for a truly flexible, personalised and pupil-led learning experience.
This enables families to fit their child’s education around their lifestyle, or provide more support if their child is gifted or has additional educational needs. Overall, structured homeschooling suits families who are looking for a better balance between academic rigour, student support, and flexibility.
Discover the benefits of structured homeschooling
Effectively acting as ‘school away from school’, structured homeschooling provides students with the learning materials, feedback and support they’d get in a traditional school, whilst allowing them to learn at their own pace, in their own space, and in ways that work for them. Discover how structured homeschooling works, and how our school is doing it differently.
