Exam Information
How online A Level exams work at Wolsey Hall Oxford
At Wolsey Hall Oxford, most of our A Level courses lead to Cambridge (CAIE) qualifications, except for Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History of Art, and Politics, which lead to Pearson Edexcel qualifications.
Your student can take Cambridge A Levels over one or two sittings (known as AS and AL), both in the UK and internationally. Edexcel International A Levels can also be taken in two sittings (known as AS and AL). For Edexcel UK A Levels, exams can only be taken during the Summer sitting.
Finding an A Level exam centre
Many of our A Level courses require students to sit their exams with external exam centres as private candidates. This means you’ll need to apply to an exam centre directly so that your student can take their A Level exams. We will provide useful information and help you find a suitable exam centre, but we can’t apply for you.
Once you enrol with us, you’ll get access to our Exam Advice course on our student learning platform. This includes an up-to-date list of exam centres, with full contact details that have been checked and approved by our Exams Officers.
We recommend getting in touch with an exam centre early to make sure they offer exams for the courses, levels and sittings your student needs before you enrol.
Booking your A Level exam entry
Before you register your student for online A Level exams, we’ll send you the exam codes and timetables for your chosen subjects. Please note that there is a deadline for booking exam entries. Some centres accept late entries but usually charge extra.
2025 A Level exam entry deadlines:
- May/June exams – 31st January
- October/November exams – 1st August
- March exams (India only) – 1st November
We recommend reaching out to an exam centre as early as you can, as places for private candidates can fill up quickly.
The May/June sitting is the most popular, so more centres are usually available for private candidates. Contact exam centres before school holidays, ideally before late June, to ensure relevant staff are available. For the October/November sitting, you may need to travel further, often to a UK Tutorial College or an International School abroad, and exam fees may be higher.
Access arrangements
If your student has special educational needs and requires access arrangements for their A Level exams, we recommend contacting your preferred exam centre as soon as possible. Not all centres can provide access arrangements, and some may charge additional fees.
Access arrangements could include extra time, a separate room, a scribe, using a laptop, or modified papers (such as coloured or enlarged paper). Exam centres can also guide you on what supporting evidence may be needed for your application.
A Level Edexcel practical exams in science
Our UK A Level courses in Biology, Chemistry and Physics include a separate Practical Endorsement as part of the assessment. If your student is studying these subjects, they will need to complete at least 12 activities to show they can use the practical techniques listed in the syllabus. They will receive a separate Pass or Fail grade based on their performance.
You can find a list of UK exam centres offering the Practical Endorsement below.
We offer remote invigilation for Edexcel International A Level Science exams, allowing your student to take their tests online with live supervision and exam-room standards.
