Supporting gifted learners through homeschooling

Overview

Supporting bright minds to reach their full potential

If you’re the parent of a gifted child, you’ll understand both the joys and challenges they can face on their educational journey. By homeschooling with Wolsey Hall Oxford, you can help them unleash their abilities with a wide range of world-class courses and learning materials, which they can work through at a level and pace they feel comfortable with.

What makes a child gifted?

The National Association of Gifted Children (NAGC) defines a gifted child as being able to perform at higher levels compared to children of similar age or experience, and who as a result may need adaptations to their education to help them realise their potential. According to the NAGC, students with gifts and talents:

  • Come from all racial, ethnic, cultural and economic backgrounds.
  • Need access to the right learning opportunities to reach their potential.
  • Can have learning and processing disorders that need specialist intervention and accommodation.
  • Need support and guidance to develop socially and emotionally as well as in their areas of talent.

If you’re unsure whether your child is gifted, you can find examples of behaviours and qualities exhibited by gifted children on the Mensa website.

Why homeschooling works for gifted children

Homeschooling is one approach to meeting the needs of gifted children, offering the flexibility for your child to progress faster and study at a higher level than they’d be able to do in a mainstream school. Studying with Wolsey Hall Oxford gives them the space they need to thrive on their own terms, enabling you to encourage their interests and giving them the time to explore the subjects that they find more engaging. They’ll be able to independently research the questions that teachers don’t always have the time or knowledge to answer in traditional school. And they won’t be held back by having to progress at the same rate as other children in their class.

This flexibility is backed up by extensive feedback from our in-house Tutors and support from our Student Progress Managers, who’ll guide your child through our internationally recognised Cambridge curriculum to help them make the most of their talents.
