Overview

Information about our Primary courses

At Wolsey Hall Oxford, we understand how important your child’s early education is in shaping their future. The Primary years build the foundation for later learning — developing essential skills like reading, writing, math, and communication, as well as curiosity, confidence, and independence.

Our homeschooling Primary courses are structured, parent-guided programmes that give you the tools, resources, and flexibility to support your child’s education at home.

Each “Year” of study is planned over approximately nine months, the equivalent of one academic year, with 12 months of full access to the course to allow for holidays and breaks. You can choose the subjects, number of courses and the level of study that best suit your child’s ability and needs, whether you are building a full homeschooling study programme or supplementing in-school learning.

Your child will progress through their courses with a mix of online and offline resources, including videos, textbooks and interactive activities, all accessible via our student learning platform. You’ll also receive detailed assignment feedback from your child’s Tutors as well as ongoing support from your dedicated Student Progress Manager, to ensure your child can unleash their full potential.

Why Primary education is important for your child

Primary education lays the groundwork for your child’s academic progress and lifelong learning. These early years are when your child builds essential literacy, numeracy and critical-thinking skills — providing the foundation for success across all subjects and future stages of learning.

During their time with Wolsey Hall Oxford, your child will start to develop core life skills such as reading, writing, problem-solving and communication alongside subject-specific knowledge. Our courses introduce key topics across maths, science, and languages in an accessible, engaging way, to begin to broaden their understanding of the world.

They’re also designed to support your child to develop emotionally and socially, with opportunities to collaborate, create, and connect with other students through activities, clubs and competitions.

Primary education also encourages your child to become increasingly independent in their learning, preparing them for the transition to Secondary education and beyond.

How we compare with UK primary schools

Many of our families choose to study with us because they’re looking for a more flexible alternative to traditional school, but one that still provides the academic structure and quality they expect. Designed to provide a rigorous and well-rounded education, our Primary courses follow the English National Curriculum and Cambridge curriculum whilst giving you the freedom to personalise your child’s learning at home.

This flexible structure gives your child the opportunity to enjoy a more personalised, balanced and engaging learning experience — whether they need extra support in a particular subject, more stimulation to stretch their abilities, or more time to pursue commitments outside their education.

Here’s how our approach compares with a typical UK primary school:

Children follow a fixed timetable with set lessons each day. You have the flexibility to create a schedule that suits your child’s routine and learning pace.
Learning takes place in a classroom setting, with one teacher leading a group of students. Learning is guided by you at home, with support from expert Tutors and a dedicated Student Progress Manager.
Subjects typically include English, Maths, Science, Computing, Geography, History, Art, Music, a foreign language and PE. Your child can enrol in any number or combination of subjects to suit their needs and interests.
All children progress at the same pace through the year. Your child can study at their own pace, with 12 months to complete each course.
One-size-fits-all approach. Personalised learning based on your child’s stage, interests, and confidence in each course.

What’s included in our Primary courses

Our combination of structured resources and personalised support ensures your child receives a world-class Primary education online, without the constraints of a traditional classroom.

Hours of Study

How much time will your child need each week?

Our Primary courses are designed for children aged 4 to 11 – equivalent to UK Reception Year through to Year 6. Your child can enrol in any number or combination of subjects depending on their interests.

The amount of time your child will need to study each subject depends on their ability, confidence, experience, and the support you’re able to provide at home. This includes time for working through tasks, completing activities, and preparing assignments.

As a guide, you can expect to spend 1-5 hours per course in Lower Primary, and 2-6 hours per course in Upper Primary.

Each course includes a suggested weekly schedule to help you plan your time — and with 12 months to complete each course, there’s plenty of flexibility for holidays or other commitments.

Extracurricular activities

At Wolsey Hall Oxford, we know that learning isn’t just about academics. It’s also about helping your child feel connected, confident, and inspired.

All our Primary students have access to our secure Primary Community website, where they can take part in a wide range of extracurricular activities. These include monthly themed clubs, competitions, and live show-and-tell sessions, designed to help them express themselves, share ideas, and interact with other homeschooling children.

Our Primary clubs include Art, Creative Writing, Book Club, Chess, Lego, Eco Club and more. These activities offer a fun and supportive space for your child to explore their interests and connect with other students around the world — all within a safe, supportive environment.

Whether your child is naturally social or needs encouragement to engage with others, these creative outlets help them build friendships, confidence, and a sense of community, wherever you are in the world.

Your role in your child’s Primary education

Our Primary courses are parent-guided, which means you’ll play an active part in supporting your child through their studies.

In Lower Primary (typically ages 4 to 7), your child will need close guidance from you every day. You’ll follow clear, easy-to-use resources, help them stay engaged with activities, and provide structure as they build early literacy and numeracy skills.

As your child moves into Upper Primary, they’ll begin to take more responsibility for their own learning. You’ll see them become increasingly independent — and by Year 6, they may be working through their studies mostly by themselves

Throughout the process, you’ll be supported by our expert team. Your dedicated Student Progress Manager will help you stay organised and answer any questions, and our Tutors will provide detailed feedback on your child’s assignments.

How much do Primary courses cost?

Our flexible, pupil-led approach to homeschooling gives you and your child more choice over their education – and what you pay for it. Build your child’s very own personalised course bundle based on their interests and ability, and only pay for the combination you choose – whether you're looking for a full homeschooling study programme, or just one or two subjects to supplement their in-school education. We also offer flexible payment plans to help you spread the cost.

You can find more information on our Course Fees page. Our friendly Admissions team can also advise you on building the perfect course bundle for your child.
