Information about our Lower Secondary courses

Designed to be fun, engaging and academically rigorous, our Lower Secondary online homeschooling courses challenge your child while preparing them for studying at IGCSE level. Each course should take around nine months to complete – the equivalent of one academic year – with up to five hours of study a week per subject, allowing your child to take a selection of courses at the same time.

At Wolsey Hall Oxford, our Lower Secondary homeschooling courses unleash the curiosity of children ages 11 to 14. Whilst this aligns with Years 7, 8 and 9 in the UK, we prioritise ability over age, meaning that children who are younger or older than the age group for their equivalent school year can take each course at the level which best matches their current knowledge and abilities. Our Admissions Team is on hand to advise which year they’re best suited to.

Why Lower Secondary education is important for your child

At Lower Secondary level, we encourage your child to become more independent in their learning – a key skill for higher education and beyond. Our Lower Secondary (UK Key Stage 3) courses will give them a strong foundation for gaining their formal educational qualifications, making them ideal preparation for our GCSE Level homeschooling courses.

We understand how important it is for your child to socialise and make friends too. That’s why, alongside their studies, our Lower Secondary students have their own dedicated Community website where they can interact with other Wolsey Hall Oxford students around the world, get involved in fun extracurricular clubs, and take part in student competitions. At this crucial stage in their education, this helps them develop transferable skills whilst enabling them to relax and pursue their non-academic interests.

How we compare with UK secondary schools

Our Lower Secondary courses are designed to align with UK Years 7, 8 and 9, or ages 11 to 14. However, you can enrol your child at the level that you feel best matches their abilities in a particular subject. For example, if your child is gifted at Maths but struggles with English, they might be best suited to Year 9 Maths but Year 7 English as a Second Language.

At the end of their Lower Secondary English, Maths and Science courses, your child will complete an internal assessment to test them on what they’ve learnt and identify whether they’re ready to move onto IGCSE. Our Tutors will assess these tests and send you a report on their performance, giving you and your child useful extra feedback ready for the next stage of their education.

This flexible structure gives your child the opportunity to enjoy a more personalised, balanced and engaging learning experience — whether they need extra support in a particular subject, more stimulation to stretch their abilities, or more time to pursue commitments outside their education.

Here’s how our approach compares with a typical UK lower secondary school:

What’s included in our Lower Secondary courses

Our combination of structured resources and personalised support give your child everything they need to thrive in their Lower Secondary studies — helping them build confidence, deepen their knowledge, and prepare for GCSE level.

Hours of Study

Our Lower Secondary courses each take around 100 hours of study per year, plus extra time for completing assignments. You can use our handy study hours calculator to help you plan how many hours a week your child will need to focus on their learning (taking into account the length of the course and any holidays you have in the diary).

Our personalised, pupil-led learning approach means your child can complete their courses at their own pace, giving them the freedom to take more or less time than this depending on their abilities, organisational skills and the support they have at home. With no live lessons or set timetables, they’ll also be free to study at the times when they’re most productive – so that they can thrive in their learning.

Extracurricular activities

At Wolsey Hall Oxford, we know that learning isn’t just about academics. It’s also about helping your child feel connected, confident, and inspired.

With access to their own dedicated Lower Secondary Community website, your child can make new friends and share their interests and talents with children just like them, around the world – as well as joining fun extracurricular clubs to pursue their interests.

These include clubs focused on chess, cookery, debating and more, which all build transferable skills that will benefit your child throughout the rest of their education and beyond. They’ll also be able to take part in regular student competitions.

Whether your child is naturally social or needs encouragement to engage with others, these creative outlets help them build friendships, confidence, and a sense of community, wherever you are in the world.

Your role in your child’s Lower Secondary education

The longer our students are with Wolsey Hall Oxford, the more independent they become! By the time your child reaches Lower Secondary, they’re likely to be learning completely independently, with minimal input and mentoring needed from you. We recommend being on hand to offer support and encouragement, and keeping track of their process with your own log-in to our student learning platform.

How much do Lower Secondary courses cost?

Our flexible, pupil-led approach to homeschooling gives you and your child more choice over their education – and what you pay for it. Build your child’s very own personalised course bundle based on their interests and ability, and only pay for the combination you choose – whether you're looking for a full homeschooling study programme, or just one or two subjects to supplement their in-school education. We also offer flexible payment plans to help you spread the cost.
