An affordable alternative to private school

Overview

World-class education, for less

Like every parent, you’ll want what’s best for your child’s education. Perhaps you dream of securing them a place at a private independent school – especially if state school isn’t an option, or doesn’t meet their needs.

However, we understand the financial sacrifices and commitments you have to make to provide your child with this life-changing opportunity. With traditional private schools being unaffordable for many families, you might feel like you’re out of options, or frustrated that you can't give your child the start in life that you want for them.

Online schools like Wolsey Hall Oxford offer a more affordable alternative to traditional private schools, without compromising on education quality. If you want your child to be able to unleash their full potential with a premium education for a fraction of the price, our Cambridge-approved, supportive online school is the right choice for you.

Flexible, supportive private school education online

With us, your child will get all the benefits of a traditional private school – including expert Tutors, more 1:1 pastoral support, and an internationally respected British curriculum – but with the added flexibility to choose what, how, where and when they learn, something you won’t find at any other school in the world.

Find out more about our pupil-led educational approach below and discover how we can help your child learn without limits, so they can unleash their full potential.

Benefits of Wolsey Hall Oxford as an alternative to private school

Impact of the private school VAT change on UK families

If you’re based in Britain, you’ll be aware that the government removed the VAT exemption from UK private schools in January 2025, meaning there is now an additional 20% charge on private school fees. You'll be pleased to hear that our school is exempt from this increase – meaning our course fees have been unaffected.

If enrolling your child in a traditional UK private school is now unaffordable for your family, your child can still benefit from a world-class, private British education with us – all from home, at their own pace, and without the VAT increase. We’d love to welcome you to our global homeschooling community!

Frequently asked questions

Are there any live online lessons?

No – and that’s by design. We believe every child deserves an education that’s as unique as they are – which is why our students can choose what, where, when and how they study, with no live lessons, set timetables or crowded classrooms to hold them back. Instead, they’ll have access to an enriching variety of multimedia learning materials that they can work through at their own pace, helping them become independent, self-directed learners.

What is the deadline for applying?

There’s no deadline for applying for our Primary or Lower Secondary courses – your child can start studying at any time of the year. They’ll also be able to start GCSE and A Level courses whenever they’d prefer to, as long as they have enough time to study and complete the courses before their intended exam dates. Our admissions team can advise you on the most suitable exam dates based on when you would like your child to start their studies.

How are the fees different to private school fees?

Private schools typically charge parents on a termly basis with the average termly cost being approximately £5,000/term. Wolsey Hall charges per course and you can pay in full or in instalments. Visit our fees page to find out more and head to our Course Fee Guide Calculator page to estimate how much schooling with Wolsey Hall might cost for your family.

Can we/our child select what courses they wish to study?

Yes, you are able to decide the courses your child wishes to study. You can view the courses on offer for Primary, Lower Secondary, GCSE and A Level on our website.

What extracurricular activities are available?

We encourage our students from across the world to connect with each other through our Community websites. We also facilitate clubs such as art, chess, creative writing and cookery and regularly run competitions for students to flex their creative skills, as part of our extracurricular offering.

What involvement do I have as a parent in their studies?

Your involvement as a parent will be determined by the level of study that your child is at. For Primary studies, parents will play a more hands-on facilitating role, however once your child reaches Secondary level, the learning is very much directed at the student and we support them through self-directed learning.
