I am a fully qualified secondary school teacher with 12 years teaching experience. I have taught both in the UK and internationally. At present, I teach history and sociology in an all ability college in Northern Ireland, having previously spent time teaching in Saudi Arabia and India. I enjoy creating a supportive and stimulating learning environment whereby all students can reach their full potential.
I have always had a passion for the social and historical world, recognising the importance of understanding our past and present to shape the future. With a love of critically analysing the social world, I completed a BSc Honours degree in Sociology, at Ulster University, before a completing a PGCE in Sociology with History at Queen’s University, Belfast. Having begun my teaching career in Belfast, I then embarked on a culturally enriching experience by teaching in Saudi Arabia and India. During my time spent in Asia, I taught a diverse range of students, developing my experience of teaching students with English as an additional language. I got to travel to some amazing places and came home culturally richer, with a life time of memories and new experiences.
In 2015, after four years teaching, I returned to full-time education to complete a Masters in Education at Queen’s University, Belfast. An extremely enriching professional journey, it allowed me to reflect on, and develop, my teaching practice by undertaking modules in areas such as Special Educational Needs and Developing Thinking Skills.
Outside of teaching, I enjoy pursuing hobbies and spending time with family and friends. With a lifelong passion for music and drama, I am part of a musical society where I enjoy participating in concerts and an annual musical production. I also like to stay active by going on hill walks and spending time in nature.

My teaching background is within Sociology, Psychology, Applied Science and Early Years. Since achieving my BA (Hons) degree and PGCE, I have obtained extensive experience of teaching, assessing, monitoring and tutoring learners in a variety of settings. Prior to this, I had a diverse nursing career, mainly working within a surgical speciality.
Having worked for over 12 years as a senior examiner in health and social care, childhood education and psychology, GCSE and A Level awards, I have a unique insight into preparing students for final examinations. Employment as a moderator for the A Level Applied Science and medical based units has enabled me to use my nursing expertise and knowledge to help students prepare for success in their final assessments. I currently also write and edit examination papers for a leading exam board.
The use of empathy is embraced within my teaching, and my ethos is based on partnership and mutual respect. I have a calm, nurturing approach. I pay attention to detail, and I work well to deadlines.
I am sensitive to the needs of all levels of students, using positive reinforcement as a tool to promote good relationships and raise aspirations with a ‘can do’ approach.
Sociology is a fascinating subject and will change the way you view the world around you. This understanding is invaluable in any 21st century working environment as it raises awareness of power relationships, and provides a foundation as to how we view our place within global society today. Have you ever wondered how we developed into today’s society? Have you thought about how the way you see yourself determines the way that other people identify you? A Level Sociology will help you to make sense of the society we live in and understand the cultural and identity issues which affect us all.
I am looking forward to sharing this knowledge and joining you on your learning journey. When not teaching, my hobbies include designing and creating patchwork quilts for children, gardening with sub-tropical plants, reading about and practicing the metaphysics of positive thinking.

I find all Social Sciences fascinating as they give me a great understanding of the world. I studied Latin American Studies, a multi-disciplinary degree that included major components in sociology and Economics. These components helped me progress on the theories learned at A Level and discover how they relate to developing countries. I then began teaching these subjects at A level following my PGCE and taught for 23 years in both 11-18 schools and Sixth Form Colleges around Hampshire and Yorkshire. In 2017 I also completed a part-time MA in Research at Leeds University.
For the last six years, I have concentrated on teaching and tutoring one-to-one, building on my twenty years of experience as an examiner and assessor for AQA, OCR and CIE exam boards. I enjoy helping my students love these fascinating subjects. Alongside this role, I am a tour guide for Food Tours in Yorkshire, taking small groups to local independent restaurants and bars to taste delicious food and wine and meeting many interesting people visiting the area.
I live in Harrogate with my partner and two cats and have two daughters who have now left home. I love the Spanish language and culture and have previously lived in Spain and Mexico. I am always trying to improve my use of the language, and I am currently also trying to improve my French. I have always loved travelling, and my recent trips have taken me to Sri Lanka and the Baltic countries.
Regarding my teaching, I hope my enthusiasm for my subjects, kindness, patience and clear feedback on students’ assignments help all students achieve their aims.

I think I’ve always been interested in Psychology and Sociology. I could read and write when I was three years old and set about learning as much as I could about the world around me and all the different people in it. I realised that we are all different, even when our lives appear similar, and I wanted to understand why that was.
My degree in Psychology and Sociology at Leeds University was the beginning of my fascination with the science of mind and behaviour. After that, the logical next step was to share my love for the subject as a teacher.
I began in 1992 with five students at a large inner-city comprehensive school and developed the course until almost half of the students in my Sixth Form took A Level Psychology. Until a few years ago, my life was centred on teaching and learning – I supported students in being the best they could be, overcoming barriers to reach their potential, as well as teachers to become effective in the classroom. I believe what Carl Rogers said, “that a person cannot teach another person directly; a person can only facilitate another’s learning” and that is what I have always done my best to do.
When I reached 50, I decided to take the Gap Year so many of my students had experienced. I did all the usual things, travelling around Namibia, volunteering and then managing a local charity shop and indulging my love of live music. I missed teaching though, and decided to become a Tutor to keep sharing my passion for Psychology and Sociology. I combine this with my role as a Food Tour guide in Harrogate and York, taking small groups to local independent restaurants and bars to taste international and vegan food and wine. The rest of my time is spent with my beloved bull terrier, Bootsie, enjoying the beautiful countryside of North Yorkshire where I live.

Welcome to Wolsey Hall Oxford! I love learning and am excited to facilitate your learning journey. I have lots of experience teaching both Business Studies and Sociology. I began teaching these subjects at GCSE and A level in 2005 and continue to work part-time in a local secondary school. For seven years, I was Subject Leader for Sociology, and I have been an examiner for Cambridge International since 2015, so I am extremely familiar with the Cambridge International syllabuses.
I consider myself to be a life-long learner. Since completing my BA (Hons) and PGCE, I have undertaken several postgraduate courses and am working towards completing a Masters. Completing a Masters has enabled me to combine knowledge of Business and Sociology, for example, taking the sociological perspective of postmodernism and using this perspective to explore organisational leadership styles.
Before becoming a teacher, I spent five years working in banking and life assurance which inspired me to begin studying Business Management at university. In addition, my husband and I are directors of a limited company, so I have practical experience of the setting up and running of a business as well as the theoretical underpinnings learnt in my undergraduate degree.
I am passionate about raising awareness of the many inequalities present within society. I have three sons (including two teenagers) and have greatly enjoyed introducing them to feminist theories!
When not teaching, tutoring, studying or parenting, I enjoy swimming as much as possible (although in an indoor swimming pool – I am not brave enough for sea swimming in the cold Irish Sea that surrounds where I live!)
