Science has fascinated me since Primary School, and I’m committed to transmitting my enthusiasm to others. I believe that learning is exciting and should be enjoyed!
Teaching Physics provides the opportunity to discover (and indeed understand) the wonders of the world. I encourage you to ask questions like “why?” and use scientific skills and evidence to help you reach the answer.
I prefer active learning, using examples from everyday life and practical work. I feel it essential not just to impart knowledge, but also to help you understand how to learn. Physics is an evolving subject and we, as students and Tutors, must progress with it. We all learn differently, and I will try to adapt my teaching methods to what will work best for you.
After graduating, I started working as a teacher and greatly enjoyed it. I then had the unexpected opportunity of doing my PhD in Physics at a university in Budapest. This was followed by postdoctoral research at the Oxford University. I worked on interesting nanotechnology projects, focusing mainly on Carbon Nanomaterials.
Fortunately, I could also work with students. My job involved student supervision, laboratory exercises and summer project management. During this time I realised how much I missed teaching and so I returned to the role of an educator.
Since then I have worked in colleges in Oxford and Budapest. I have taught IGCSE, A Level, and undergraduate level to adult students both from the UK and overseas. I am now an experienced Physics Tutor.
I’m sure you will enjoy your time studying with Wolsey Hall Oxford, and I hope I can help contribute to your success.

I am a teacher of Physics with nearly ten years’ experience in both independent (selective) and state-funded (non-selective) educational settings in the UK. Prior to teaching, I had a successful 15-year career as a Principal Hydrologist working in Flood Risk Management, as a Mathematical Modeller and Project Manager. I am a positive, enthusiastic person by nature, always seeking out the best in people. My most significant attribute as a teacher is building, positive, trusting relationships with my students.
I completed my Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from the College of Engineering at the University of Colorado, USA, specialising in Physics, fluid dynamics and mathematical modelling of hydrological and hydraulic systems. I completed my teacher training at the University of Bath in the UK. I have lived in the UK for over 20 years.
My passion for Physics started at 17 years old when my teacher inspired me to compete in a national Physics competition called the ‘Olympics of the Minds’ in the USA. I competed against 1000’s of teenagers and qualified for the finals in Washington DC.
Since then, I have loved Physics! Now I am fortunate to be a teacher of Physics. As a teacher, my main objective is to inspire students to achieve as much as possible during their education by providing them with many opportunities to help them achieve their goals. I have tutored students to gain places at Oxbridge and other Russell Group universities. I have also helped my students prepare for the British Physics Olympiad national competition here in the UK.
When I am not teaching (or tutoring) I love sailing, running, hiking, swimming, bodyboarding, cycling and camping. I regularly race my Laser dingy at my local sailing club and occasionally compete in national regattas. I enjoy playing the piano and listening to music – you can always find me listening to Mozart when planning my lessons and playing classical music to my students when they are completing various activities, either in the classroom or online setting. I love solving puzzles and talking to elderly people. I enjoy looking after the environment and learning about various plants and animals, and growing vegetables in my allotment. I look forward to sharing my passion for Physics with you.

I am a fully qualified teacher with over 30 years’ experience of teaching Lower Secondary and GCSE Science. I’m eager to share this experience with you. I have worked in Secondary schools, both in the UK and also in Madrid, and I’m presently Head of Science in a Secondary school in Somerset.
I have taught Physics, Chemistry and Biology and I have a comprehensive knowledge of the current Science curricula and syllabi. I am still passionate about Science education and how it is key to an understanding of the world around us. I have always strived to make Science engaging for my students, so they can be inspired by the amazing world we live in!
Science is a process of discovery that allows us to develop new technologies to improve lives and deal with all sorts of problems. Science is continually refining and expanding our knowledge of the universe, and as it does, it leads to new questions for future investigation.
I have a keen interest in sport, particularly cricket and rugby. I still play cricket for my local club and am a supporter of the Gloucester rugby team. I also love to get out and about walking our two dogs.
Science will never be “finished.” This is what has sustained my love for Science, and why I hope to continue to inspire scientists of the future.

Hello there. My name is Denise Symons. I would like to take a couple of minutes to introduce myself and share my qualifications, teaching experience and teaching philosophy.
I have a Physics degree from the University of York, and my PGCE (Secondary Science 11-18) was gained from the University of Kingston upon Thames in London. Since qualifying as a teacher over 25 years ago, I have taught in various schools, ranging from a single-sex grammar school to large mixed comprehensives in the UK state school system. More recently, I have been working in a mixed independent boarding school and tutoring small groups and individuals online.
I have always been fascinated by the teaching and learning process, so what makes teachers teach better and students learn better. I became a Leader of Teaching and Learning in one of my previous schools, and part of my role was to help and mentor other teachers to help them and their students make improved progress.
As well as striving for all students to achieve the best that they can, I also am very aware that having the right environment, building confidence, and asking the right questions are also vital to maximising student attainment and enjoyment of a subject.
I have helped many students make excellent progress, whether they find Physics and Chemistry tricky or love them, and strive to excel.
When I am not teaching, I enjoy playing golf, walking, cycling, going to the gym, and travelling when the opportunities arise.
I look forward to sharing my passion for the sciences and my love of learning with you.

I have always enjoyed the process of learning, of understanding how seemingly random things are entwined, and how they affect one another. I always knew that I wanted my life to be filled with learning, but I never anticipated that teaching would also become part of it.
Growing up I loved to read, and once thought my future would involve English, but my strength lay in Science, especially Physics and Engineering. As my love for Science overtook my love of books, I realised that these were things I wanted to pursue. I gained a Masters degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at The University of Portsmouth, which is where I also completed my PGCE and my PhD.
Finishing my degree was hard. It was only made possible by utilising a wide range of study and thinking skills passed on to me by an inspirational teacher. After becoming a mother, I began to realise the importance of transferring those study and thinking skills to the next generation, to teach children how to think.
Physics and Engineering were originally my passion, and STEM was initially what introduced me to teaching. But through teaching I have developed a fascination and love for Chemistry, and it has become one of my favourite subjects to teach and learn.
Outside of education, my time is filled by my family and my dogs. We lead an active life and I enjoy walking and running as a household. I also still love to read whenever I get the opportunity.
I look forward to helping you achieve your own eureka moment.

I have been driven to understand how the Universe works for as long as I can remember. My first memories include spending hours reading my huge Science encyclopedia and watching Science documentaries. I consider myself a student of all Sciences; I never really had a favourite as I wanted to know a complete picture of the Universe. I studied all Sciences until University Level, then chose to focus on Marine Biology in the year 2000.
After completing my PGCE in 2005 and starting to work in Secondary schools, I quickly realised that Physics was not popular amongst the staff or students! My Science Department Director allowed me to begin leading the Physics curriculum, and I worked hard to make the lessons reveal the beauty and excitement in Physics. I went on to be appointed as Head of Physics in my next school. I enjoyed re-modelling the curriculum to make Physics accessible, relevant and exciting. I became a Physics specialist and enthusiast and continued to develop my understanding and teaching of Physics. I enjoyed working in mainstream schools at Lower Secondary, GCSE and A Level until I chose to leave the traditional physical classroom in 2021.
Since then, I have started a Luthier business making and repairing guitars. I also teach yoga in Primary schools and mark GCSE Physics exams for the AQA every Summer. I am thrilled to be part of the Wolsey Hall Oxford team and being able to share my enthusiasm for Physics with you.

I have always been curious about the living world and observing its wonders. I can vividly remember being six years old and sneaking downstairs every Saturday morning at 6am to watch the latest instalment of National Geographic. Over time this grew into a passion for Sciences. For me, they were the only disciplines that could offer explanations for the world around us. I continue to be fascinated by their complexities.
I am an experienced teacher of 15 years. I have a BSc in Biological Sciences with a minor in Psychology and a Post Graduate certificate in Educational Management. I currently teach Biology and Psychology through to A level and IGCSE Chemistry in the independent sector.
I have very much enjoyed teaching the IGCSE course for the last four years, which is a fantastic preparation for further study of the Sciences. I also work as a principal examiner for CIE and examine Psychology A Level for AQA.
I grew up in New York State in a very rural community. In my third year of University, I had the opportunity to study abroad in the UK. I absolutely loved my time in England! After completing my degree, I relocated here. Fifteen years later, I am still loving it. I have taught in a variety of schools, from state comprehensives to grammar schools in Salisbury to a highly academic independent school in Ascot. My young family and I relocated more recently to the beautiful Norfolk countryside.
I would like to wish you all the best as you embark on your course. I hope you find the material stimulating and the challenges ahead rewarding. If you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. I promise to never judge and always be friendly and supportive. There is no greater enjoyment in my job than the sharing that ‘lightbulb’ moment with a pupil and a poorly understood topic makes perfect sense.
I was once told by an esteemed colleague; ‘A true teacher has three loves; love of learning, love of learners and the love of introducing the first two loves together’. I hope that I can help you find your love of understanding the fascinating complexities of the science of life. I look forward to helping you to achieve many successes along the way in your studies.

Science is awesome! I grew up on the coast of Kenya, and was introduced to science early. My father was doing his PhD in Tuna Fish Migration – he’s a big game fisherman, which meant I got to spend my formative years elbow deep in shark guts. One of my favourite birthday presents was a little microscope, so I could look at onion skins, spider webs and dust while my dad sat next to me mounting slices of tuna liver on slides. After he came home from fishing, my job from around age five was also to help clean the engines, or help make lures using an ancient lathe.
As a teenager I loved school, and had excellent teachers for most of my subjects, but I particularly respected my Science teachers. My class nearly revolted when our beloved chemistry teacher left just before our final year! I studied Physics, Chemistry and Biology at A level, and my favourite topics were Genetics, Inorganic Chemistry and Astrophysics. I was also incredibly lucky to get a holiday job with a snorkelling tour company, spotting dolphins so regularly that I was able to recognise most of them by the shape of their fins. I used to spend my free time writing notes on their behaviour and movements. It was from this point on that my path was set in stone.
My mum is a teacher, and I spent most of my high school post-exam periods sitting with her class of ten year olds and helping them with their studies, and realised very early on that I wanted to be involved in education as well. I went on to study Biology at the University of York. For the first time I was completely surrounded by people just as passionate about the subject as I was! I was able to get involved in projects that got me into a classroom as well, such as tutoring and mentoring.
After my degree I went straight into an Oxford Brookes University graduate teacher programme, teaching in Banbury. Classroom teaching was an amazing experience, full of superlative ups and downs. One of my favourite memories is of a 12 year old boy who came up to me every lesson with a diagram of a new idea for a perpetual motion machine. Every day I’d praise the things he’d got right and explain why this particular one could never work – we got into some really complex physics, which makes me wonder if I’ll one day see his name in New Scientist, having finally got his machine to work.
I left the classroom in 2010 to have a family, but couldn’t bring myself to stop teaching. I’ve been tutoring constantly since then, and look forward to every lesson. I love the fact that the courses are evolving too, especially the introduction of more quantum physics in the A Levels – I’m excited to be going on a course on quantum and particle physics in November! So please, if you have any questions or need anything, don’t hesitate to contact me.

When I was young I found it hard to study, and particularly struggled in Mathematics. But eventually I was able to catch up and achieve at a high level. I studied Metallurgy and Science of Materials at Oxford University, which included Advanced Mathematics and Physics.
After Oxford I worked for over 20 years developing lightweight materials and structures. I used a deep understanding of how materials behave to tackle tough challenges and create innovative solutions. I was using my knowledge of Mathematics and Science in technology development, using a deep understanding of how materials and structures behave to design new concepts like buildings that fold up or jackets that keep firemen cool!
I also taught sailing, canoeing and other adventurous activities to children and teenagers for many years, and helped run youth groups. I have also been involved in humanitarian and community work including building and food growing. For the International Scouts’ Jamboree I ran activities for up to 200 young people. And in Nigeria we built an earth dome house and explored how to grow food more sustainably by copying natural ecosystems.
Now I use all my experience to help young people of all ages to understand and enjoy Maths and Science subjects. I have been giving individual tuition in Maths and Physics for many years now to international students with a wide variety of backgrounds, ability levels and ages from six years to adult.
My long and varied experiences all help with my work of understanding, empathising and building good rapport with students. I can identify problems quickly and explain things clearly and simply. I show how each topic fits within the ‘whole picture’ of Maths and Science.
Mathematics is all about finding patterns in the world of shapes and numbers. And Science is about finding surprising and beautiful patterns in nature and the universe. Scientists and mathematicians search for laws, because laws produce orderly beauty instead of chaos. They learn to think clearly, driven by the challenge and thrill of discovering new and amazing truths and connections.
I hope that as you study you will also feel some of this excitement as you learn new skills, discover new insights and see more clearly some of the astounding features of the remarkable world we live in.
At school I struggled with Maths, but eventually I mastered it enough to enter Oxford University. So I can understand and empathise with students who struggle, and I can help them overcome their problems and achieve their full potential.

I have been teaching in Secondary Schools for the past six years, and my current role is as a Physics teacher in a small independent school. Before qualifying as a teacher, I worked for ten years in marine conservation. I ran and organised conservation-focused expeditions to several countries and was fortunate to have spent many hours in our oceans encountering some of the world’s most incredible marine life.
When I moved back to the UK to settle with my family, I began working in a local school in learning support and eventually led year groups as a pastoral lead. I worked in this incredibly varied field for four years and then went on to complete my teacher training. I quickly developed a passion for not only the teaching of science but also the ever-changing landscape of the Science of Learning. I studied for my master’s degree in 2019 and completed my thesis, primarily a study in creating conditions around improved retention of information. I find research into cognitive function fascinating and continue to read up on developments in emerging research. I am considering undertaking a PhD… but not yet.
My passion for teaching Physics was quite accidental as, contrary to my background in marine biology, I found the world of Physics surprisingly ordered and logical. I took to teaching the subject like a duck to water, and now I prefer to teach Physics out of the three sciences I am trained to teach (although I also enjoy teaching Chemistry).
When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my two children. I partake in individual sports, including triathlon (sprint), long-distance swimming, cycling and surfing (badly) and paddle boarding (not so badly). If I’m after a more relaxing time, I like walking, mountain biking and photography.

I have always enjoyed Science and finding out how something works. I knew throughout my school years that I wanted to have a career in Science, and after working in industry, I have successfully taught Science for many years. I have a wealth of teaching and tutoring experience across all three sciences but particularly in Chemistry. As a teacher, my results have consistently exceeded national averages for the top grades. Currently, my main focus is online tutoring and homeschooling – which I enjoy very much and find highly rewarding.
I am an enthusiastic teacher and believe that all students can obtain their academic goals with practice, clear communication, and timely help. I enjoy teaching students about the wonders of Science and understanding the key concepts that underpin how or why something happens. I seek to ensure students develop their own confident understanding of Science and become independent learners.
I obtained my Science degree from London University and my PGCE teaching qualification from the Open University, which I took part-time whilst working. I experienced first hand the challenges and rewards of combining home study and receiving guidance from my tutors via email and the early internet.
I am married with two grown-up sons. When I’m not teaching or tutoring, I am a keen yachtsman, competing in international races, including the Fastnet race. I play the bass guitar, and when time allows, I can be found repairing my 300-year-old thatched cottage.
I look forward to working with you on your chosen Wolsey Hall Oxford course and sharing my enthusiasm for Science and learning.

I’ve always loved Science, ever since I received a video of “how it works” for Christmas as a child. Unfortunately, I only had the second volume in a set, so I spent years wondering how things work that didn’t begin with letters F-M! Happily for me, it’s now possible to get detailed explanations on any subject with a few clicks, so I can (and do!) indulge my curiosity on all topics, and am cultivating that same curiosity in my children.
Physics became a real passion for me at A level, where I was lucky to have a couple of excellent teachers who absolutely loved their subject. I can remember many conversations with them excitedly explaining that they didn’t know the answer to my questions because nobody knew yet- the science was still being done! At about the same time, I borrowed a telescope with a good enough lens to see the rings of Saturn, and remember how mind-blowing it was to realise how small we are in the universe.
This joy in Physics led me to study Engineering at Cambridge, and I then moved through a range of jobs, including a brief spell as a Police Constable, before coming to teaching international students at a Foundation College. There I taught Maths, Physics and Engineering. There is something enormously satisfying about helping a student grapple with a concept they find challenging, and seeing them get to an “aha!” moment. I try to emulate my A Level Physics teachers and let my enthusiasm for my subjects shine through to inspire my students.
I’ve also worked for eight years as an examiner and supervisor for Cambridge Assessment on an international AS Physics paper. This has proven useful in my tutoring, as I know the way examiners think and what sorts of things they are looking for.
When I’m not working, I spend time chasing around after my children and dog in the countryside near my house, or playing and creating games for the PC using the Unity engine. I’ve now been teaching for nine years and it’s still something that genuinely brings me joy every day. I’m looking forward to showing you how amazing Science and Maths is. Remember, Physics is Phun!
