Overview

Our Year 7-9 Computing homeschooling courses will develop your child's practical and technical skills in areas such as computational thinking, programming, and data management. These courses follow the English National Curriculum for Key Stage 3 Computing, completed over three progressive parts. Teaching them hands-on coding, it will help them:

  • Develop computational and critical thinking.
  • Use new knowledge, skills and creativity to understand the world around them.
  • Improve their problem-solving skills.

Perfect preparation for our IGCSE™ Computer Science course, studying Computing at Lower Secondary will help your child explore a subject that affects every part of their lives. They’ll build their understanding of how computers work through a balanced mix of online and offline study that they can explore at their own pace.

These courses are ideal if your child is interested in how computers work, wants to learn how to code and hopes to progress onto IGCSE™ Computer Science. If they’re more interested in how we use computers in our everyday lives, choose our Digital Literacy courses, which covers everything from how people interact on social media to fake news and emerging technologies like AI.

Additional information

Our courses are designed to be flexible, enabling you to tailor learning to your child’s individual needs and pace. You can work through the course materials in a way that suits your family, whether that's following a structured schedule or taking a more adaptable approach.

Requirements: Your child will need to have completed Primary Level Maths to a good standard to take this course, and some previous experience of programming would also be useful or should have completed Primary Computing. This is because although Part 1 of the course assumes no prior knowledge, developing programming skills can be challenging. For a non-coding option, your child may prefer to learn skills for using computers through our Lower Secondary Digital Literacy course. The majority of our students (irrespective of school year) start with the Part 1 course due to breadth and variety within computing curricula.

Equipment:

Your child will need use of a laptop or desktop computer running Mac OS, Windows 10 or 11 or Linux, as well as a Google account and Google Chrome. We advise against the use of Chromebooks.

They’ll be given access to a website for writing Python, HTML,  a SQL database (Part 2) and the online book for each module. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel are used on the course, but if you don’t have these, your child can use Google Suite (Docs, Slides and Sheets) instead.

Study method: Online study with structured content, designed for more independent learning. Expert Tutor feedback and a dedicated Student Progress Manager are included to help support your child’s progress.

Course samples for Lower Secondary courses

We provide course samples so you can explore our Lower Secondary courses before enrolling your child.

A course sample gives you a clear preview of the course structure, content, and level, helping you decide whether it is right for your child.

A course sample includes:

  • An overview of learning covered across the course
  • Example lessons
  • The first assignment from the course
  • Information about learning materials and guidance

The course sample shows what the course would look like if your child were enrolled, helping you feel confident before moving on to making an enquiry or application.
