Overview

Homeschooling courses in the UAE, from Basic to Secondary

We're delighted to be welcoming a growing number of families homeschooling in the United Arab Emirates who are enrolling with us.

In the UAE, more expat families are choosing homeschooling as private school places become harder to secure and fees continue to rise. Many of our students are based in areas like Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.

We offer online courses from Basic to Secondary, designed to help your child learn and grow at their own pace. Whether you’re looking for a structured alternative to traditional school or a more flexible option that fits your family’s lifestyle, our personalised, pupil-led approach ensures they will get the best start.

Start at any time - even mid-year

Life doesn’t follow the school calendar, and neither do we. Whether your family’s circumstances have changed unexpectedly or you’re planning ahead for the next academic year, your child can begin studying with Wolsey Hall Oxford as soon as you’re ready.

There are no fixed terms, no rigid start dates, and no need to wait for September. Our courses are designed so that students can join at any point and work through the material at a pace that suits them, with full tutor support from day one.

This is particularly valuable for families in the UAE who may be navigating school waiting lists, transitioning between curricula, or dealing with disruption to their child’s normal schooling. Rather than losing weeks or months, your child can start making progress straight away.

No live lessons - no timezone stress

Our courses are designed for independent, self-paced study. There are no live lessons to attend, no set timetables to follow, and no risk of your child missing a class because of travel, relocation, or timezone differences.

Your child accesses their course materials, multimedia resources, and tutor feedback through our online learning platform, available 24/7. They study when it works for them, whether that’s early morning in Dubai or late afternoon in London.

For families who may be splitting time between countries, relocating at short notice, or simply looking for an education that doesn’t depend on being in a specific place at a specific time, this flexibility is a genuine advantage - not a compromise.

Homeschooling in the UAE - what you need to know

Homeschooling is an established option for families in the UAE, and many expatriate families see it as the best fit for their needs and circumstances. Regulations can vary between emirates and may evolve over time, so we always recommend checking the current rules in your specific area.

Many families in the UAE choose to enrol with a recognised online school as part of their child's education, either as their primary programme or alongside other arrangements. As a registered Cambridge International School and Pearson Edexcel Approved Centre, our qualifications are internationally recognised and widely accepted by universities and employers.

We already support a significant number of families across the UAE, including in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah. Our admissions team is happy to talk through how our courses work alongside UAE education requirements and help you understand your options.

Please note, we support many students in the UAE where some online communication methods don’t work very well. Our Student Progress Managers and Tutors are happy to use other online messaging tools or phone calls to contact you if that’s easier for your family.

Common questions from UAE families

Can my child start mid-year, or do we need to wait for September?

There’s no need to wait. Our courses have no fixed start dates, so your child can enrol and begin studying at any point during the year. This is especially helpful if your family’s circumstances have changed unexpectedly and you want to avoid a gap in your child’s education.

Can my child study with Wolsey Hall alongside their current school?

Yes. Many families in the UAE use our courses alongside their child’s existing school, whether that’s to add extra subjects, provide continuity during disruption, or prepare for IGCSEs and A Levels. Our courses are self-paced with no live lessons, so they fit around your child’s existing commitments.

Can my child enrol for just one term or a short period?

Our courses are designed as complete academic programmes, not short-term subscriptions. Each course covers a full year or two years of study depending on the level, with structured content, regular tutor-assessed assignments, and a clear progression pathway. This means your child gets genuine depth and continuity rather than a temporary fix. However, you don't need to enrol in a full timetable of subjects. Many families start with one or two courses, which keeps the commitment manageable while still giving their child a structured, accredited programme to work through. If you're unsure how many subjects are right for your child's situation, our admissions team can advise.

My child has been following a different curriculum (IB, American, local). Can they start IGCSEs?

Yes. Many of our students begin IGCSEs after studying a different curriculum abroad. Your child would start the IGCSE course from the beginning, so there's no need to have covered specific UK content beforehand, though a solid foundation in English and Maths will help across all subjects. Some subjects, like Business Studies and Economics, don't require prior GCSE-level study in that specific subject, which can make them good options for students building a new programme. Our admissions team can help you plan a subject combination that suits your child's background, strengths, and goals.

Are your qualifications recognised internationally?

Our courses follow the Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel curricula, which are among the most widely recognised qualifications in the world. Cambridge IGCSEs are taken in over 140 countries. These qualifications are accepted by universities and employers globally, including in the UK, US, Europe, and across the Middle East.

How do exams work for students based in the UAE?

Students sit their exams as private candidates at approved exam centres. In the UAE, the British Council and many international schools accept private candidates for Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel exams. We provide a verified list of exam centres and guidance on the registration process through our student learning platform. It’s worth contacting your preferred exam centre early, as places can fill up for the popular May/June sitting.

What if my child needs to relocate during their studies?

This is one of the core advantages of studying with Wolsey Hall. Because there are no live lessons and all course materials are accessible online, your child’s education isn’t tied to a physical location. If your family needs to move, whether within the UAE, back to the your home country, or elsewhere, your child simply continues studying from wherever they are. Their tutor support, course progress, and qualifications pathway all stay the same.

How much does it cost compared to private schools in the UAE?

Our course fees are significantly lower than most private school tuition in the UAE, and there are no additional costs for uniforms, transport, or facilities. You can find our full fee schedule on our fees page, and our admissions team can help you plan a programme that fits your budget. We also offer course bundling discounts when enrolling for multiple subjects.

Do I need to register with any UAE authority to homeschool?

Regulations around homeschooling in the UAE can vary between emirates and may change over time. We recommend checking the current requirements with your local education authority. Many of our UAE families are enrolled with us as an accredited online school, which provides a clear framework of structured learning, qualified tutor support, and recognised qualifications.

What support does my child get?

Every student has a dedicated tutor for each subject who provides detailed feedback on assignments, plus a Student Progress Manager who monitors their progress across all courses and keeps them on track. We also have a pastoral and wellbeing team available for wider support. For students with additional learning needs, our specialist Learning Support team can provide tailored one-to-one sessions.

Frequently asked questions

Can my child study from outside the UK?

Yes, absolutely! We have students in over 130 countries, and as long as you have a reliable internet connection your child will be able to study with us wherever you are in the world. Due to restrictions on access to our student learning platform, we’re unable to enrol students in North Korea or Iran at this time.

Can I enrol at any time?

Absolutely - with no fixed terms or start dates, you can enrol whenever works best for your family.

Are there any live online lessons?

No – and that’s by design. We believe every child deserves an education that’s as unique as they are – which is why our students can choose what, where, when and how they study, with no live lessons, set timetables or crowded classrooms to hold them back. Instead, they’ll have access to an enriching variety of multimedia learning materials that they can work through at their own pace, helping them become independent, self-directed learners.

What is your student learning platform like?

Our user-friendly online student learning platform contains your child’s courses, along with numerous resources to help them learn in a way that works best for them. It’s also where they can message their Tutors and get information about what’s going on in the Wolsey Hall Oxford community. As a parent, you’ll also have access to the platform with an Observer account, so that you can follow your child’s progress.

How many hours per day will my child have to study?

The number of study hours varies from course to course, and you can find the total recommended number of hours on each of our course pages. The number of study hours per day will depend on the number of subjects your child takes and how many months they’re taking it for. However, with no live lessons or set timetables, they’ll have complete flexibility over when and how many hours they study each day. For more guidance, take a look at our study hours calculator.

How long do courses take?

Our Primary and Lower Secondary students can enrol at any time of year, and typically complete each subject within 9 to 12 months of enrolling, but this does depend on their prior knowledge and how quickly they learn.

For GCSE Level, we recommend studying the full courses over 18-24 months (about two years). For AS and A Level, we recommended a study period of 9 to 12 months for AS courses and 18-24 months for full A Level courses. You’ll find more information on recommended study hours on each course page.

What is the deadline for applying?

There’s no deadline for applying for our Primary or Lower Secondary courses – your child can start studying at any time of the year. They’ll also be able to start GCSE and A Level courses whenever they’d prefer to, as long as they have enough time to study and complete the courses before their intended exam dates. Our admissions team can advise you on the most suitable exam dates based on when you would like your child to start their studies.

Can my child study with Wolsey Hall Oxford alongside traditional school?

Yes – many families choose Wolsey Hall to complement their child’s existing education. Whether they’re attending school full-time, studying part-time, or following a flexi-education model, our courses are designed to fit flexibly around your family’s routine.

Your child might want to deepen their knowledge in a specific subject, access higher-level learning, or simply explore something new – all at their own pace, and without the pressure of fixed timetables or live lessons.

If you’re combining school and home learning – often known as flexischooling – you might find our Flexischooling page helpful. It explains how families can successfully balance both, and how Wolsey Hall Oxford can support that journey.

How do we find an exam centre?

We’ll give you a list of relevant exam centres in your region. In the UK, the Cambridge and Edexcel exam boards have centres throughout the country. Outside the UK, your child can usually sit their exams at a local British Council office or at an international school. Availability can vary, so we recommend contacting your chosen centre before your child enrols on their course.

What kind of support will my child get from Wolsey Hall Oxford?

Our 3-tier system of support means your child will benefit from personalised advice and guidance throughout their studies with us. This support comes from three main sources:

  • Tutors: your child will have a Tutor for each subject, who’ll assess and grade their assignments. You and your child will have an online ‘welcome call’ with their Tutors before starting each course, and you’ll both be able to message them any time via our online student learning platform.
  • Student Progress Managers (SPM): Your dedicated Student Progress Manager is your key link with our school. Your SPM will monitor your child’s progress across all their courses, checking in with them regularly and ensuring they stay on track with their assignment schedule.
  • Three-tier support: For students who need extra Learning and Wellbeing Support, our team of specialist Tutors can offer tailored 1:1 online sessions in all areas of SEND and wellbeing, from ADHD to anxiety and everything in between. You can access this optional additional service for an additional fee.

How much support will my child need from me?

Your involvement in your child’s education is vital, but the amount of involvement they will need from you varies according to their age. Our pupil-led approach encourages students to develop into independent learners, but your child will need your full support to guide their learning at Primary level, with this dependence gradually reducing as they progress through the learning levels. By A Level, your child should need minimal support from you (though we’d still encourage you to engage with their learning!) Ways you can help include:

  • Encouragement: offer your child support and discuss any issues they may be having.
  • Communication: encourage them to stay in regular contact their Tutors and SPM.
  • Timetable: ensure they have a daily and weekly study timetable, and stick to it.
  • Progress review: regularly review their progress relative to their study timetable and assignment schedule. You’ll have access to our student learning platform via an “Observer” account so that you can monitor how they’re getting on (younger Primary students have a single login that you can both use).

Will my child have opportunities to socialise?

We understand how important it is for your child to socialise with other children their age, so our global online community gives them the chance to connect and interact with other homeschooled children around the world. They’ll also be able to join fun clubs where they can try out new hobbies or share their interests with other like-minded students, taking part in activities such as debating, cookery chess, and more.

What extracurricular activities are available?

We encourage our students from across the world to connect with each other through our Community websites. We also facilitate clubs such as art, chess, creative writing and cookery and regularly run competitions for students to flex their creative skills, as part of our extracurricular offering.
