GCSE Level course information

Overview

Information about our GCSE Level courses

At Wolsey Hall Oxford, we provide a wide variety of GCSE Level online courses for homeschooling students, all designed to help students develop their independence as learners.

In the UK, most children take six to nine subjects over two academic years to gain a broader education before specialising in their A Levels. The subjects your child chooses at GCSE Level will help to shape their future education and career path, and we’re here to support them throughout their studies.

All our GCSE Level courses are assessed by a final exam, with no coursework included. Cambridge IGCSE™ course exams are held twice a year. Several past exam papers are featured in the final modules of our courses to help students prepare for the real thing. These include the most recent paper, which can be taken as a mock exam and submitted to the course Tutor for assessment and feedback for an additional fee.

Why GCSE Level education is important for your child

As your child moves from Lower Secondary (UK Key Stage 3 – Years 7 to 9/ages 11-14) to GCSE level (UK Key Stage 4 – Years 10 to 11/ages 14-16), you may be wondering what changes to expect.

Like all our courses, our GCSE level online courses are designed to be challenging and engaging as well as academically rigorous. They lead to IGCSE™ qualifications (for Cambridge courses) and GCSE qualifications (for Pearson Edexcel courses), which are equivalent and enable your child to progress to A Level study.

When choosing their GCSE level subjects, it’s important for your child to consider whether they want to continue studying at A Level and eventually go to university. If they are planning to take any subject at A Level, then a good pass in that course at GCSE Level will be expected. Their subject choices might also be influenced by the country where they plan to study at university, as entry requirements can vary widely across different regions.

Many students at GCSE level haven’t quite decided on a clear career path, so we recommend taking a good mix of subjects based on their interests to help keep their options open.

How we compare with UK secondary schools

Wolsey Hall Oxford is a great choice for families looking for a personalised, world-class education. With no live lessons, set timetables or crowded classrooms to contend with, your child can set their own schedule, work at their own pace, and be more independent in their learning – a key skill for life after school.

As one of the few Cambridge-approved online schools, we’re proud to offer the gold-standard IGCSE™ curriculum that is respected by leading universities and employers worldwide. Throughout their studies with us, your child will receive feedback on their module assignments from experienced Tutors, who are specialists in their subjects. We also offer the option for GCSE Level students to book 1:1 tuition in core subjects like English, Maths, Science, and Modern Foreign Languages. These 45-minute sessions provide an opportunity for your child to explore specific topics with one of our Tutors, to help support their learning.

Our students also benefit from ongoing 1:1 support from their dedicated Student Progress Manager (SPM), who will help them stay on track at every stage of their studies.

This flexible structure gives your child the opportunity to enjoy a more personalised, balanced and engaging learning experience - whether they need extra support in a particular subject, more stimulation to stretch their abilities, or flexibility to pursue commitments outside their education.

Here’s how our approach compares with a typical UK GCSE Level secondary school:
Typical UK GCSE Level school
Wolsey Hall Oxford
Children follow a fixed timetable with set lessons each day  Your child can create a schedule that suits your their routine and learning pace
Learning takes place in a classroom setting, with one teacher responsible for a large group of students  Your child learns independently at home, with support from specialist Tutors, a dedicated Student Progress Manager, and you
Most students study 8–10 GCSE subjects over two years, including core subjects like English Language, English Literature, Maths, and Combined or Triple Science. These are usually combined with a humanities subject and a modern foreign language. Students then select 1–3 additional options from a list offered by their school. Subject choices may be influenced by timetabling and teacher constraints.  Your child can personalise their studies and choose as many or as few GCSE Level courses as they like, suited to their interests, abilities and ambitions - with no timetable, Year Group or subject limitations.
All children progress at the same pace through their subjects.  Your child can learn at their own pace, working through easier subjects and modules more quickly and taking more time with ones they find more challenging.
Progress is measured by classroom assessments and national tests.  Progress is tracked through 10-12 Tutor-marked assignments per subject, to test students’ understanding of each course module. Past papers are also provided, with the option to complete a marked mock exam for an additional fee. This all helps students prepare for their final GCSE Level exams, which are taken externally at an exam centre.
Students learn through a one-size-fits-all approach.  Your child’s learning is personalised based on their capabilities, interests, learning styles, and confidence in each subject.

Our GCSE Level courses typically take around 150 hours of study, plus time needed for preparation of each assignment (10-12 assignments per subject).

For IGCSE™ English, Maths and Combined Science, plan for up to 180 hours of study.

This time could be longer or shorter depending on your child’s ability as a learner, their organisational skills, and the support they receive from you at home.

Extracurricular activities

At Wolsey Hall Oxford, we know that learning isn’t just about academics. It’s also about helping your child feel connected, confident, and inspired.

With access to their own dedicated Secondary Community website, your child can make new friends and share their interests and talents with other students around the world – as well as joining fun extracurricular clubs to pursue their interests.

These include clubs focused on chess, cookery, debating and more, which all build transferable skills that will benefit your child throughout the rest of their education and beyond. They’ll also be able to take part in regular student competitions.

Whether your child is naturally sociable or needs some encouragement to engage with others, these extracurricular activities will help them build friendships, boost their confidence, and feel a part of our student community, wherever you are in the world.

Your role in your child's GCSE Level education

As well as receiving support from their Student Progress Manager and feedback from their Tutors, your child may also need your support to ensure they can unleash their full potential. As their parent, you can help them create a personalised study timetable based on their chosen subjects and the time they can commit to their learning.

We also encourage you to connect with other Wolsey Hall Oxford parents online. We have a private Facebook group for parents of current GCSE Level students, which gives you the opportunity to connect with other families, ask for advice and share your experiences.
