Sporting Academies

A flexible education

Elite Sporting Academies face a unique challenge when it comes to ensuing their young athletes receive a high quality education. Training and competition schedules can be demanding –  so an education that is both academically rigorous but also flexible is required to allow athletes to successfully pursue their educational goals alongside their sporting careers.

Wolsey Hall has a wealth of experience in providing the structured and flexible courses needed to fit alongside a busy training schedule. With no online lessons to attend, elite sports students can pursue their schooling at a pace and time that fits in with their sports training and competition commitments.

Students are able to attend sporting events and pick up their education at the place they left of: there are no missed lessons to catch up on or any need for teachers to provide additional support.

PSG Academy Pro Residency in France provides high-quality education alongside elite training for aspiring footballers from around the world. PSG currently offers Wolsey Hall Oxford courses to their Lower Secondary aged students.

“We are a boarding school offering a hybrid of traditional schooling with online learning,” explains Leandro Cruz, Education Manager and Assistant Coach at PSG Academy Pro Residency. “Our Years 6-8 are offered Wolsey Hall courses as we appreciate the structure and support that these courses deliver to our younger students. Our teachers are on site all the time and help to facilitate the learning, using the Wolsey Hall course material. Parents prefer this hybrid approach too. Previously we used a US high school curriculum, but it didn’t have the structure we wanted for our younger learners.”

“The flexibility of the learning is essential too as our students study in the mornings, then have football training in the afternoons with matches at weekends. Here in France we have longer school holidays too but Wolsey Hall has worked with the students to ensure their schedule fits around this and their other commitments. This has ensured they were able to cope with the number of assignments.”

“If our Lower Secondary students wish to continue onto IGCSEs and A levels with Wolsey Hall Oxford they also have this option. Offering a British curriculum is appealing as it means students can progress onto achieving British qualifications and they find it easier to apply to universities worldwide later on.”

A student’s view

“I haven’t followed an online course before, but I really like it because it gives me more flexibility to focus on my football training,” says Zubair, a student at PSG Academy. “The modules are easy to follow and I feel that I have learnt a lot this year. I like that we have textbooks and workbooks so it is not purely online, and it is more challenging than other online courses. I also like that we have a schedule for assignment submissions as that helps me stay on track.”

“I would recommend Wolsey Hall to other students who are studying at home or in a boarding school because it gives me more opportunities to study anywhere in the world and it is an internationally recognised qualification. It allows me flexibility to focus on football training.”
