Why study Cambridge A level Further Maths?

The Cambridge A level Further Maths allows you to develop skills which will help you study a range of STEM subjects at a higher level. It strengthens transferrable skills such as logical thinking, modelling and analysis. It is also highly valued when applying to university for competitive courses such as Medicine, Computer Science and Engineering.

David Hilbert famously said, “Mathematics knows no races or geographic boundaries; for Mathematics, the cultural world is one country”

Mathematics represents a universal language which can be followed by anyone, anywhere in the world. It can be abstracted from the context and studied in a pure form and it can also allow us to apply the same mathematics to a diverse set of situations from a range of disciplines such as space travel, ecology, economics and disease prevention.

What do I need to know to enrol?

Further Maths at A level builds directly on, and assumes prior knowledge of many topics from, A level Maths. We therefore require you to have completed A level Maths with an A grade (or be predicted an A) before enrolling on this course.

All A level students will also require a Grade C or 4 for IGCSE English Language.

The syllabus and exam

This course will prepare you for the Cambridge AS and A level Further Maths syllabus 9231 

The full Advanced level qualification comprises AS and A level. N.B. If you take Mechanics at AS, you must take Statistics at A level, and vice versa. Exams take place in June and November.

AS level

For the AS level in Further Mathematics you will sit two papers. Paper 1 and either Paper 3 or Paper 4.

Paper 1

Further Pure Mathematics 1 worth 60% of your AS grade and 30% of your overall A level grade. (2 hours)

Paper 3

Further Mechanics worth 40% of your AS grade and 20% of your overall A level grade. (1 hour and 30 minutes)

Paper 4

Further Probability & Statistics worth 40% of your AS grade and 20% of your overall A level grade. (1 hour and 30 minutes)

A level

For the full A level in Further Mathematics you will sit two additional papers. Paper 2 and either Paper 3 or Paper 4

Paper 2

Further Pure Mathematics 2 worth 30% of your overall A level grade. (2 hours)

Paper 3

Further Mechanics worth 20% of your overall A level grade. (1 hour and 30 minutes)

Paper 4

Further Probability and Statistics worth 20% of your overall A level grade. (1 hour and 30 minutes)

Whichever route you take to acquire the full A level in Further Mathematics, you will sit the same four papers. There are Cambridge exam centres in over 150 countries. We can provide details of the most convenient.

All of our A level courses include a number of past exam papers in the final module. These include the most recent paper which can be taken as a mock exam and submitted to your Tutor for assessment and feedback for a modest additional fee.
